Introduction
Russell-Cooke has a long history of supporting charities, organisations and individuals, particularly in south west London and Kingston. Some of our current projects are detailed below.
Charities
We support a number of local and national charities through sponsorships and staff fundraising events. In addition we donate £5 to one of our selected charities for each service questionnaire completed and returned by clients. Each year the charities are selected by our staff and the nominated charities for 2007/08 are; Friends of the Neonatal Unit at St George's, Home-Start Kingston, Cystic Fibrosis Trust and Plan International.
For many years we have supported the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability in Putney. The Hospital in Putney provides specialist assessment and clinical rehabilitation services which transform the independence, confidence, dignity, and quality of life for patients with brain injury and neurological diseases. The hospital is not funded by the NHS, and relies heavily on voluntary donations to continue its unique work.
The firm has sponsored a number of fundraising events for the hospital and we also sponsor the hospital’s marathon running team each year.
"Always imaginative and enthusiastic in their support, Russell-Cooke Solicitors has been an integral part of our fundraising initiatives and first class benefactors over many years."
Gaz Daly - Royal Hospital's Director of Fundraising
Education
Since 1996 Russell-Cooke has sponsored an annual prize for the best overall academic performance by a student on Kingston University's Post Graduate Diploma in Law course. Partners and solicitors at the firm are only too aware of the effort that goes into attaining a legal qualification and the intense competition involved in obtaining a training contract or pupilage. The prize acknowledges the efforts of those who achieve academic excellence in this field.
Winner of the prize in 2007 was David Bridgwater who is now undertaking his training contract with the in-house team at international engineering company Thales.
Sport
We have recently become involved with two flourishing rugby clubs.
We are sponsors of Esher Rugby Club whose 1st team play in National League Division One. The team’s recent promotion was the highest achievement of its 85 year history and Russell-Cooke’s support will help the club maintain their position and improve facilities for all of its teams.
Rosslyn Park Rugby Club is a centre of rugby excellence at Mini and Youth level in South West London. We sponsor the Mini section which consists teams whose ages range from five to eleven. Our support will also help the club develop its community rugby project. We have been partnered in the sponsorship of Rosslyn Park by Sportsmatch, an award scheme funded by Sport England who match investments of businesses in grass roots sport.
We’ve supported Rebecca Romero since she was a junior. After competing in rowing at the highest level – she won a silver medal in the 2004 Olympics and was a World Champion in 2005 – she has made a spectacularly successful switch to competitive cycling. Competing in the British Time Trial Championships a mere five months after starting cycle training, she won and promptly became British champion! If selected for the Bejing Olympics Rebecca will be the first British athlete to compete in the summer Olympic games in two different sports.
Russell-Cooke is also sponsor of the Roehamtpon Gold Cup, a pro-am tournament for female golfers which has been held at the Roehampton Club for over 75 years. Our recent support has meant that the club can now attract some of the top professional lady golfers, which further enhances the tournament's reputation.
The Arts
The firm is proud sponsor of the newly opened Rose Theatre Kingston. We have been involved with the theatre since its inception and have supported it throughout its development. The theatre’s director, Sir Peter Hall, described the theatre as “The acting and auditorium I have been dreaming of all my professional life”.
The firm has been heavily involved with the Kingston Museum over the past ten years. In addition to sponsoring touring exhibitions from artists such as Matisse and Hockney, we sponsor The Brill Collection, a series of topographical watercolour and pen and wash paintings commissioned to record through art, the changing landscape of Kingston. Each year a competition is held for art students of Kingston University to paint a picture of a building or area which is about to be redeveloped. The winning painting becomes part of the collection.
"The Rose is pleased to have the support and dedication of Russell-Cooke and its team of solicitors who have played an important role in helping us realise this exceptional new theatre for the local community and beyond".
Sir Peter Hall - Rose Theatre Director.
