richard frimston


Richard is a Partner and Head of the Private Client Group and advises clients in relation to their wills, probate and tax planning issues and offers Notary Public services. Areas of expertise include cross-border estates and international private law issues. 

Richard is a member of various professional bodies including the European Law Institute, the British Institute of International and Comparative Law, the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law and the Association of Contentious Trust and Probate Specialists. He is the Law Society representative to the European Committee of the Union Internationale du Notariat (UIN). Richard has been described as impressive "as a leader in cross-border estates and capacity matters" (Chambers 2011). Richard was awarded 'The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) Founder's Award' for outstanding achievement (December 2010). He is currently Chair of the EU STEP Committee and co-Chair of the STEP Public Policy Committee.

Co-author of Sweet & Maxwell's 'European Cross-Border Estate Planning' and the international sections of Heywood & Massey and Jordan's Court of Protection Practice , Richard regularly gives lectures and publishes articles in Private Client Business, New Law Journal and various other legal journals. He is included in the 'Honours' section of the Citywealth Leaders List 2012.

He is identified as a 'leading individual' in Chambers Global 2013 and Chambers UK 2012 with the latter commenting that he is "incredibly talented" and is praised for his "superb understanding of maddening EU directives" and specialist knowledge of French legal requirements. Legal 500 (2012) refers to Richard as "a cross-border guru, with an unerring instinct" and that his "knowledge of international issues is second to none." The "encyclopaedic" Richard is considered "one of the rare UK advisers who has a firm grasp of what is going on abroad". (Chambers 2013).

Richard studied at Imperial College London and completed his legal training with Russell-Cooke in 1979. He became a Partner in 1982 and Head of the Private Client Team in 1993. He is a Notary Public
