In December 2012, the CRB and Independent Safeguarding Authority merged to form the new Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) as part of the changes brought in by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012. This new system will provide a joined up service combining both criminal record and barred list checks. CRB checks will now be known as DBS checks.
