Woodland -v- Essex County Council  - In this case, the Supreme Court has given guidance on circumstances when local authorities and other public bodies might be held liable for negligence on the part of independent contractors who they ask to perform some of their functions or duties.  Here, Essex County Council was found to have a duty to ensure that swimming lessons arranged by a school during school hours were carefully conducted and supervised, even though the lessons were given by individuals who were not employed by the school.
