From 29 July 2013, claimants in the employment tribunal began having to pay a fee of up to £250 to submit a claim, and a higher fee if the claim proceeded to a final hearing. Before summer 2013, there was no charge to submit a claim or obtain a hearing.  

Following a unanimous judgment from the Supreme Court in a case brought by Unison, fees have now been abolished. The court found they prevented access to justice and disproportionately affected women.
