In the recent case of  Tchenguiz v Imerman, (August 2010), the Court of Appeal decided that it is illegal for spouses going through a divorce to engage in "self help" in order to learn more about their estranged spouse's financial affairs and that to do so could result in a criminal offence being committed.  This judgment has caused considerable consternation among family lawyers, many of whom believe that it will have a significant impact on the way in which some financial disputes are conducted on a divorce.  In her briefing note, Camilla Thornton, Partner in the Family team, explains the impact of this judgment on a spouse who takes their own steps to establish the wealth of their spouse and gives some advice on alternative options available".
