Members of Russell-Cooke's family team attended Resolution's 23rd annual conference in Cardiff at the weekend.

Resolution is the UK's association for family lawyers with 5700 lawyers who believe in a constructive, non-confrontational approach to family law matters. Resolution campaigns for improvements to the family justice system and promotes and adheres to best practices. To find out more please visit their website: http://www.resolution.org.uk

The conference provided an opportunity to all attending lawyers to receive updates on the new and developing areas of family law and to discuss current issues with their peers. Samantha Little, partner and Head of the Children Team at Russell-Cooke, presented a children law case update to over 300 delegates at the conference.

The conference was well timed, as the interim report from the Family Justice Review, headed by David Norgrove was published on 31st March 2011. Please click here to view the full report.

Mr Norgrove also delivered the key note speech to the conference and outlined the wide ranging recommendations, including setting up a dedicated Family Justice Service and emphasising the importance of mediation to resolving family disputes where possible. Contrary to many media reports last week, whilst supporting the positive role that grandparents and family members can play in the lives of children, the Review does not suggest that grandparents should have greater rights when applying for contact with grandchildren. There is now a consultation period on the recommendations until 23rd June 2011 and Russell-Cooke's family team will be considering the review and responding to it.

Family lawyers are preparing for new procedural requirements which come into force on Wednesday 6th April 2011, in particular the requirement for mediation meetings. View our briefing on this subject. please .
