Russell-Cooke is one of the leading firms supporting a campaign to encourage solicitors in large law firms to apply for judicial appointment.

The initiative, launched by the Law Society, aims to address the lack of leading practitioners applying for 'silk' and judicial positions, by inviting firms to sign up to a declaration of commitment to the promotion of judicial appointments.

There are currently a number of solicitors who serve as District Judges and work in Tribunals, including Russell-Cooke partners Francesca Kaye and Fiona Read. Francesca, a partner in the Commercial Litigation team, became a Deputy District Judge in 2003.  Fiona, a partner in the Family team, acts as a part time district judge in the civil courts.

Interestingly few solicitors apply for judicial positions, despite possessing the skills to do so.

The initiative has been developed in liaison with and in response to feedback from solicitor judges, with the aim of creating a community of solicitor judges in all courts and tribunals, providing opportunities for networking and also supporting solicitors who aspire to judicial positions.

It is hoped that the commitment demonstrated by Russell-Cooke, Magic circle and other top law firms, including Allen & Overy, Linklaters and Clifford Chance, will act as a powerful magnet and inspiration for the rest of the profession.

By empowering more solicitors to apply for silk and judicial positions, the enviably high quality of our judiciary in England can be successfully sustained for the future.
