Children and education team's Eva Akins was interviewed live by BBC's Eddie Nestor about the assessment process for children with special educational needs and disability.

Eva commented on the topical issue of Local Authorities' persistent and unlawful delay in issuing Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) within the statutory 20 week time frame in 40% of cases.

She noted that whilst it was tempting to simply blame increased demand and decreasing budgets some £70 million has been made available by LAs to spend on legal fees to defend appeals (86% of which succeed) that could be more efficiently spent on provision.
