Law firm Russell-Cooke has announced its commitment to carbon neutrality, which will see it offset its entire projected carbon usage for 2020 by the end of 2019.

Further to the firm's ongoing commitment to carry out its business in a responsible and sustainable way, Russell-Cooke has recently set up an environmental group and become members of the Legal Sustainability Alliance, a grouping of law firms committed to working collaboratively to take action to improve the environmental sustainability of their operations and activities.

In addition the firm made a commitment in its 2019-22 strategic plan "to improve the environmental sustainability of the firm and take significant steps towards carbon neutrality." Its carbon neutrality initiative means the firm will have offset more than its projected annual carbon emissions for the year ahead just six months into the period of the strategic plan.

The firm consulted all partners and employees to decide the proportion in which it would buy credits in three projects proposed by Carbon Footprint Limited. Carbon Footprint Limited is an environmental and carbon management company connecting businesses and not-for-profit organisations with carbon offsetting projects around the world.

Members of the firm have voted to invest in the chosen projects in the following proportions:

  • Borehole rehabilitation project (clean drinking water, Uganda) 57%
  • Breathing space improved cooking stoves (India) 31%
  • Kocaeli landfill gas to electricity project (Turkey) 12%

Construction partner Peter Kitson, the firm's acting partner sponsor for environmental issues, said: "As a firm we have moved up a gear in our environmental commitment over the past few years. We have cut our use of paper by almost 50% in just three years as well as improving our recycling facilities and will soon be introducing new technologies for note-taking to reduce paper usage even further. This has required a huge commitment and behavioural change from every member of the firm – after all as lawyers we are used to producing a lot of paper!

"We are very excited to be extending our efforts to achieve carbon neutrality, and to have engaged and involved our people in the choice of projects in which to invest. As a values-driven firm we seek to do the right thing in all aspects of our operations and with this initiative we have taken a healthy step in the right direction."
