The personal injury and clinical negligence department at Russell-Cooke are looking a little redder than usual in the Putney office today, 22 February.

Whilst it may look like we have been comparing wardrobe notes and decided that red really is our most flattering colour, we are in fact supporting the Encephalitis Society’s #REDforWED campaign to mark World Encephalitis Day.

Encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain which can be caused by the immune system attacking the brain in error or an infection invading the brain.

Symptoms of infectious encephalitis can range from mild drowsiness and confusion, to seizures, an inability to speak or control movement, and sensory changes. Autoimmune encephalitis can result in similar symptoms, and in addition can result in behaviour changes, hallucinations and psychosis.

Unfortunately, the early symptoms of encephalitis are not always detected, and a delayed diagnosis can worsen outcomes for them. Consultant Bernadette McGhie, who heads the brain injury team within the department, says:

“There are many forms of encephalitis and some have more devastating consequences than others. The key is always early diagnosis and the right treatment to prevent long term problems. Sadly, we have acted for many clients when the diagnosis has been missed. Financial compensation cannot undo any damage caused but can significantly aid independence and improve the quality of life for our clients and their families. It is wonderful to be able to help our clients in this way.”

Charities such as the Encephalitis Society and the Eden Dora Trust do incredible work supporting people suffering with encephalitis and their families, and funding research into causes, diagnoses and treatments, and we encourage you to check out the amazing work that they do and to support it if you can.
