Dominic Fairclough, partner in the personal injury and clinical negligence department, represented the family of Adrian Budd at an inquest into Mr Budd’s death which took place between 7-9 June 2016 in Westminster Coroner’s Court between Assistant Coroner Dolman.
Mr Budd died at the Royal Brompton Hospital following the insertion of an upgraded pacemaker during which a large vein was punctured causing a significant bleed. Further surgery was required to stop the bleed but by then it was too late to save Mr Budd.
The hospital carried out a Serious Untoward Incident Report and concluded that there were failings in the care provided to Mr Budd, particularly in respect of note keeping and communication between specialties at the hospital.
Ultimately, the Coroner concluded that Mr Budd died from a very rare complication of a necessary cardiac procedure and the family are considering whether to pursue a civil claim.
The case was reported in the press.
