Associate Emily Joss has contributed an article to Solicitors’ Journal that explores how lawyers at the start of their careers can best capitalise on professional development opportunities.

She makes a number of recommendations, including advising junior lawyers to engage with both internal and external opportunities, as well as to find a mentor to help them develop and realise their aspirations. She also suggests that, where possible, they should spend time on activities that provide different perspectives, such as secondments in different jurisdictions or with a client, and engage with business development.

The key is to take control of your own career and pursue the opportunities that are available, and play to your strengths. Where possible, seek out more senior colleagues who will invest their time and experience to support your development. Most importantly, don’t wait for the opportunity to come to you, get out there and seize it.”
