Court of Protection specialist partner Gareth Ledsham has been elected onto the STEP Mental Capacity Global Special Interest Group (SIG) Steering Committee with effect from 1 January 2022.

The STEP Mental Capacity Global SIG focuses on the increasing importance and relevance of issues concerning capacity in all aspects of legal work relating to inheritance and succession planning. The group aims to ensure that all members are kept up to date with developments and, indeed, are part of the debate and shaping the future where possible.

STEP is the Society of Trust and Estates Practitioners and is a global professional body comprising lawyers, accountants, trustees and other practitioners that assist families with their estate planning.

Gareth Ledsham said: “Issues of mental capacity are arising more frequently and, quite rightly, are attracting more coverage in the media. As lawyers we must be alive to the issues given how much is at stake. Therefore it is with great pleasure that I take up an appointment that deals with issues of such importance and such relevance. I look forward to applying my years’ of experience in this field, learning from colleagues in other jurisdictions, and playing my part in shaping STEP’s strategy and approach on these highly sensitive matters.”

As an expert in mental capacity law and contentious Court of Protection matters Gareth acts for deputies, attorneys and other interested parties on the removal of attorneys/deputies, disputed lifetime gifts, statutory wills and financial abuse claims amongst others.
