One year on: reflecting on our partnership with the Birth Trauma Association
In November 2024, Russell-Cooke was honoured to be appointed to the Birth Trauma Association’s panel of trusted legal partners, a role that reflects our longstanding commitment to supporting parents affected by birth trauma and advancing awareness of their rights and recovery.
Over the past twelve months, our collaboration with the BTA has deepened in meaningful ways, from awareness raising and education to direct support for families.
Raising awareness and amplifying survivor voices
During Birth Trauma Awareness Week, we launched a content and awareness campaign, exploring the often-overlooked physical and psychological consequences of traumatic births. Through real stories and legal insights, we sought to challenge stigma, highlight the scale of the issue, and encourage more open conversations about perinatal care and recovery.
In Trust, expertise and advocacy: supporting birth trauma survivors, our medical negligence specialists reflected on the role of legal support as part of a wider framework of healing; one that prioritises listening, compassion and empowerment. Our goal remains not only to secure justice, but to help survivors navigate the complex emotional and practical aftermath of trauma to help them to navigate everyday life; a life that may have been significantly altered from their hopes and dreams.
We also examined broader themes in patient safety and accountability. Pieces such as Age is just a number – or is it? have highlighted how demographic and systemic factors can influence outcomes in maternity care, reminding us of the importance of equitable treatment across all stages of life and the need to recognise potential risk factors across the ages.
Extending access to legal help
In partnership with the BTA, we were proud to hold a free legal clinic for birth trauma survivors, ensuring that anyone affected can access high-quality legal advice, regardless of financial circumstance and in the knowledge that they could speak with someone who understood the issues they had experienced.
For many parents, the aftermath of a difficult birth can be confusing and isolating. Questions about what went wrong, whether the care provided was appropriate, and what rights they may have can feel overwhelming. The clinic offers a safe and supportive space to discuss these issues openly with our experienced medical negligence solicitors. During individual consultations, we help participants understand what happened, whether it may amount to substandard care, and what practical options are available should they wish to take matters further.
The clinic’s purpose extends beyond legal advice. It is about empowerment; helping parents make informed decisions, gain clarity, and feel heard. For many who attend, simply being able to talk through their experience with someone who listens and understands the complexities of both the medical and legal systems is a vital step in their recovery journey.

Looking ahead
As we look to the year ahead, we remain committed to deepening our partnership with the Birth Trauma Association, expanding access to legal information and support, and continuing to champion improvements in maternity care and patient safety. We are determined that together, we will keep working to ensure that every parent’s experience is heard, validated, and met with the compassion and expertise it deserves.
