Last year saw the biggest changes to data protection law in the UK for almost two decades. The introduction of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the UK Data Protection Act 2018 meant that many charities had to look again at how and why they were collecting and using personal data across every aspect of their day-to-day operations, from fundraising and marketing to IT systems and HR.

Carla Whalen from our charity and social business team will reflect on the lessons learned over the past year and the challenges that remain, including:

  • lawful processing
  • sharing personal data
  • direct marketing
  • negotiating contracts with data protection
  • dealing with individual requests
  • data security
  • ICO sanctions and data protection in the courts
  • Brexit and beyond
