Commonhold and RTM reform: why lenders need clarity, not slogans—IFA Magazine
Partner Shabnam Ali-Khan has contributed an article to IFA Magazine on the impact of proposed commonhold and Right to Manage (RTM) reforms and why mortgage lenders need certainty around risk, governance and security.
In the article, Shabnam highlights that RTM and commonhold are often conflated, despite addressing very different issues. While RTM changes who manages a building within the existing leasehold structure, commonhold fundamentally changes the ownership model. She argues that, although reform is needed, lenders require clear frameworks, guidance and practical solutions to assess and manage risk effectively.
The best outcome would be a market in which lenders are not forced to choose between an old model they understand and a new model they have not had time to operationalise.
