In July 2024, senior associate Amy Anderson reported on the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) investigation into colorectal surgeon Mr Anthony Dixon, who faced allegations relating to unnecessary pelvic mesh operations, inadequate consent processes and substandard care provided to NHS and private patients.

This month, the Tribunal ruled that Mr Dixon will be erased from the UK medical register (pending an appeal period).  Erasure from the medical register will have the effect of permanently barring him from practising medicine.

Investigations revealed instances where Mr Dixon’s approach to obtaining informed consent for mesh surgery fell seriously below the appropriate standard. The MPTS also found that Mr Dixon engaged in premeditated and sustained dishonesty, including fabricating patient records to mislead legal and regulatory processes.

Many patients treated by Mr Dixon have since brought claims for compensation. Lawyers representing affected patients have described the decision to strike off Mr Dixon as “long overdue” and a crucial step in recognising the scale of damage caused.

The Tribunal’s decision to erase Mr Dixon from the medical register is a vital acknowledgment of the harm caused to so many patients. While no outcome can undo the suffering endured, this ruling sends a clear message about the importance of informed consent, honest record-keeping and adherence to the highest standards of patient care.
