Russell-Cooke represents child in complex social media surrogacy case concluding with adoption order
Legal director, Amy Chapman, from our specialist children law team, was instructed to represent the child in the recently reported case of Re: J (Parental Order: Adoption) [2024] EWHC 2960 (Fam).
Amy instructed Sharon Segal KC and Niamh Daly of 1GC Family Law to appear in the High Court.
This complex case began as an application for a parental order following a surrogacy arrangement initiated through informal social media channels. However, as the proceedings developed, it became apparent that the criteria for a parental order could not be met, and the case ultimately concluded with an adoption order being made in respect of the child.
The judgment highlights the potential challenges and emotional complexities that can arise when surrogacy arrangements are made outside of formal, regulated frameworks. It serves as an important reminder of the need for careful legal planning and specialist advice from the outset.
