About Matthew
I take a considered, integrative approach to estate planning, that not only focuses on tax efficiency, but also aligns with families’ values and objectives. I work collaboratively with advisers – both in the UK and across other jurisdictions – to do the right thing for my clients.
Matthew provides UK tax and estate planning advice to a range of UK-based and internationally mobile clients, including families, trustees, beneficiaries, family offices, entrepreneurs and private banks.
He regularly advises on succession planning and the efficient structuring of global assets, pre-immigration and pre-emigration tax planning, UK residence and domicile issues, and the restructuring of UK residential property holding arrangements.
Matthew has expertise in advising US-connected clients on cross-border tax matters, including the impact of the post-April 2025 UK tax reforms and the application of the US-UK estate tax treaty. He also advises on the use of trust structures to mitigate UK inheritance tax and US estate tax exposure, and on the UK tax treatment of US entities such as revocable trusts and LLCs. Matthew has spoken to a wide variety of audiences on both the US-UK estate tax treaty and the UK taxation of non-UK resident trusts.
He has extensive experience achieving positive outcomes for US and Canada connected clients. He also regularly advises on the UK tax treatment of foreign entities including foundations and trusts.
In addition, Matthew advises non-UK trustees on trust validity and the delegation of investment duties.
Before joining Russell Cooke in 2026, Matthew worked in the private client teams of two major city firms and in-house at one of the Big Four.
I would strongly recommend him to anyone dealing with sophisticated international tax matters, particularly where multiple jurisdictions and complex structures are involved.
