Time’s Up – Have You Missed the Boat?

A man's hands drawings architectural floorplan drawings. Who owns the copyright after you pay an architect for drawings or plans? —The Times

This course supports architects in understanding and confidently managing their responsibilities as impartial contract administrators when assessing extensions of time.

It explores both the legal foundations and the practical techniques needed to determine whether additional time should be granted under a construction contract.

Participants will leave with a clearer grasp of the decision‑making process, the evidential requirements, and the wider legal implications that arise when extension‑of‑time claims are made.

What the course covers

  • Legal and contractual foundations — the basis on which extensions of time are granted

  • Architect’s impartial role — duties and obligations when acting as contract administrator

  • Assessment methods — technical and practical approaches to evaluating claims

  • Claims and supporting evidence — what information is needed and how to interpret it

  • Further legal considerations — issues that arise from disputed or complex claims

Certification

All participants who complete the course will receive an official certificate of completion, recognising their understanding of extension‑of‑time assessments and the architect’s role as an impartial certifier.
