Rising number of cohabiting couples renews calls for legal reform—ePrivateClient
Partner Jemma Pollock has been quoted in an article by ePrivateClient which explores the factors behind increasing calls for change in the legal and financial provisions in place for cohabiting couples.
The article states that ONS statistics indicate cohabiting is becoming the norm for couples in England and Wales, but many are unaware of the risks to their rights – including disproportionately to women with children.
Jemma is quoted as saying “of particular note is that only seven percent of those aged 30 or under were married, but 18 per cent of them were in cohabiting relationships… whilst some of those will go on to enter into marriages or civil partnerships, many others will not do so.”
She adds that the ONS statistics add further weight to the calls for family law to change, saying:
Any such change is urgent now to end the disparity between the outcomes for children born to unmarried parents who separate as against those born to married parents who divorce, and to assist vulnerable people in cohabiting relationships with seeking the financial support that they need to rebuild after relationship breakdown.
