Senior associate from the regulation and public law team and trainee Ben Voller have co-authored an article in Solicitors Journal exploring the impact of social media on regulated professionals and the standards they are expected to uphold.

They emphasise the importance of exercising caution when sharing personal content or undertaking certain activities, by considering potential reputational risks for example, even outside of work. They add that, where a regulated professional does commit an error of judgement, their legal representative should advise them how best to demonstrate compliance through the resulting regulatory or disciplinary process to ensure damage limitation.

Regulated professionals should be well advised of the expectations over the use of social media. They should be acutely aware of the risks associated to it… Many professionals chose to pursue a career knowing of the standards to which they will be bound. Registered professionals having pursued such a career should consider the use of social media seriously."

The article is available to view at Solicitors Journal by subscription only.
