We need a balanced and authoritative approach to leasehold reform—Today’s Conveyancer
Partner Shabnam Ali-Khan has written an article for Today’s Conveyancer which comments on the need for the sector to prioritise clarity and stability rather than rushing through leasehold reform.
The article argues that while the 2024 Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act 2024 (LAFRA) marked a bold step towards modernising the leasehold system, many key provisions are still unimplemented and the market remains in limbo. Shabnam warns that further reform should be methodical and consultative, recognising that leasehold remains a significant tenure for many homes, rather than being driven by political deadlines. The profession is calling for measured implementation, proper consultation, and collaboration among government, practitioners, lenders and leaseholders so that reform can deliver meaningful, practical results rather than creating new uncertainty.
The objective of leasehold reform is widely shared: a simpler, fairer and more transparent system that works in practice as well as in principle. But that goal will only be achieved through measured implementation, proper education and open dialogue between government and professionals… In leasehold as in conveyancing, precision matters. The success of the next phase of reform will depend not on how quickly it is delivered, but on how collaboratively it is delivered.
